Assam staff sit-in over pay hike

The state employees’ joint action committee today held a sit-in at Last Gate in Dispur demanding the government to fulfil their various pending demands.

The joint action committee, which has the support of at least 58 organisations of the government employees, also submitted a memorandum to the chief secretary of Assam over their demands.

“The state Salary Revision Rule, 2010, has not actually benefited the state employees. There is still a huge difference between the salaries of the Assam government employees and the employees of its neighbouring states. The salaries of the state employees are still low in comparison to other states in the country,” said Manamohan Rajbongshi of the action committee.

“We have pointed out the differences in pay bands and grade pay in the revised report of the new salary revision rule several times. The government had also instituted an oversight committee to correct these discrepancies. Although the committee had submitted its report to the government on September this year it is yet to make the report public,” he said.

He added the government has also failed to implement the time scale promotion system for the past five years despite the fact that it had agreed to implement the same on principle.

“The government is also seemingly not bothered about the ongoing price hike of essential commodities. Some businessmen are taking advantage of the situation and common people are suffering because of this,” he------readmore
